1) Where can I access the wireless network?
The wireless network is installed and operational in all of the residence halls, as well as the library, the McCann Center, the Admissions Building, the Student Recreation Center, and Roth Hall.

2) Does this network use the plug in my room?
No, our wireless network does not require any of the plugs in your room to operate.

3) I already have AOL or another ISP. Can I use the wireless network?
Yes, you may still use your existing internet service provider, but instead of dialing up through the phone line, you will connect through our wireless LAN.

4) I have an Ethernet card in my computer already, will it work with this network?
No, our wireless network does not use standard Ethernet cards. If you already have a wireless capable computer, check with us to see if it is compatible with our system.

5) I do not have wireless built into my computer, what do I need to connect to the wireless network?
You will need a wireless adapter that is 802.11 a/b/g compliant. We've tested a number of cards and we strongly recommend using the NETGEAR WG111. In addition to being compatible with both laptops and desktops, this device offers both portability and great reception when used with the included USB extension cable.

If you have a Mac you will need an airport card.

6) Where can I get a wireless adapter?
You can buy a wireless adapter at any store that sells computers and computer peripherals (i.e. Staples, Best Buy, Circuit City, etc.). Alternately, we have an arrangement with CDWG to offer the cards at a discount. For pricing please contact our CDWG representative, Fred Riccio, at 866-743-5670.

7) Can I get help installing my wireless card once I buy it?
Absolutely!

An Information Technology (IT) staff member is available at the Student Help Desk (Roth E453) from Monday through Friday between 9:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m. and 2–5 p.m.

8) After I get my card installed, what's the best location in my room for my computer?
The interior wall of your room is the best bet because it offers the closest, least obstructed path to the signal. But you may find that reception is better in different areas of your room. We'll be more than happy to help you align your antenna for the best performance.

9) Is there anything I should keep away from my computer that might interfere with my signal?
Anything that uses power may interfere with the signal. You'll want to stay away from refrigerators, halogen lights, televisions, microwaves, and air conditioners. The unit should not be obstructed at all.

10) Can I use the network to print to the student lab printers?
Unfortunately, the dorm network is separate from the student network. The printers in the student labs are inaccessible from the dorm network.

11) Should I worry about intrusion from outside hackers into my computer while on the wireless network?
Our network is protected by cutting edge firewall technology, this technology keeps us all insulated from malicious external sources. We recommend that you protect your own machine as well because the wireless network is a community, and you may be vulnerable to intrusion from sources within our system.

12) Am I in danger of getting a computer virus because I am using the wireless network?
Any time your computer accepts data from a source outside itself, it could come in contact with malicious code. As with intrusion, our network is heavily defended against such traffic. However, it is impossible to guarantee absolute safety so we strongly recommend installing virus protection software on your computer to be safe.

13) If my laptop has access to the wireless network, can I use it anywhere in the building?
Yes, however different areas in the building will offer different levels of reception. You should also be aware that as your battery power diminishes, your performance on our network will drop accordingly. You will get the best performance in your room, with the power plugged into the wall.

14) Who can I contact if I have questions about the wireless network?
Please feel free to contact the IT Student Help Desk by phone at 845-451-1698 or by e-mail at ithelp@mycia.net.
