TRANSFER POLICIES FOR
HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

If you're in high school, you may request transfer of credit for the CIA's Food Safety and/or Writing courses under the following conditions:

Food Safety

You must have taken a one-credit class in food safety in high school or college and have National Restaurant Association ServSafe® Certification from either a ProStart high school or one of our CIA LEAP schools. The certification is valid for five years and must be active at the time you graduate from the CIA.

To be considered for Food Safety transfer credit, please submit the following with your application for admission:

  • a copy of your National Restaurant Association ServSafe® Certificate
  • an official transcript from your ProStart high school or LEAP high school
  • a completed CIA Application for the Transfer of Credit. You may obtain a copy of this application by contacting Admissions at 1-800-CULINARY (285-4627). Please review the Transferring of Credit to the CIA brochure for more details.

Writing

You need to have taken an Advanced Placement (AP) English course in high school and passed the College Board AP English exam with a score of 4 or better. A local exam cannot be substituted for the College Board exam.

To be considered for Writing transfer credit, please submit the following with your application for admission:

  • your high school transcript showing the AP English course and test score or official College Board test scores
  • a completed CIA Application for the Transfer of Credit

To obtain a copy of the form:
